Tuvalu is a constitutional monarchy, with the Queen of Tuvalu as the head of state and a Prime Minister as the head of government. The current Prime Minister, Enele Sopoaga, has been in office since 2013. Tuvalu’s government is based on the Westminster system and consists of three branches: the executive, legislative and judicial. The executive branch is composed of the Prime Minister, who is appointed by parliament, and his/her cabinet ministers. The Prime Minister is responsible for advising the Queen on matters related to government policy and for carrying out her duties in her absence. The cabinet consists of ministers from both the majority and minority parties who are appointed by the Prime Minister from members of parliament. The legislative branch is made up of a unicameral parliament called Fale I Fono which has 15 members elected to four-year terms by popular vote. The parliament passes laws, ratifies treaties and decides on matters related to national budgeting. Additionally, it monitors government activities in order to ensure that they are in line with established laws and regulations. The judicial branch is headed by a Supreme Court which serves as the highest court for civil, criminal, economic and administrative cases; local courts; military courts; arbitration courts; and other specialized courts. All court decisions are subject to review by higher judicial bodies such as the Court of Appeal or Supreme Court if necessary. Tuvalu also has several independent commissions responsible for overseeing aspects such as public service reform, human rights protection, elections administration among others. These commissions have their own boards comprised of members appointed by both Parliament and Cabinet Ministers depending on their area of responsibility. Tuvalu is a small island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean. It is made up of nine atolls and four reef islands, and has an estimated population of around 11,000 people. Despite its small size, Tuvalu has established strong foreign relations with several countries in the region and around the world. Tuvalu maintains close ties with its two closest neighbors, Fiji and Kiribati. The three countries are members of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), a regional intergovernmental organization that seeks to promote cooperation between countries in the region. Tuvalu also collaborates with Fiji on issues such as climate change, trade, security, and fisheries management. The United States is another important partner for Tuvalu. The two countries signed a Compact of Free Association in 1986 that established their diplomatic ties and provided for US military access to Tuvaluan air and sea space for training purposes. Additionally, Washington provides development assistance to support projects such as infrastructure improvements or health care initiatives. Australia is another key partner for Tuvalu due to its close proximity to the island nation as well as its shared historical ties with Australia’s former colony of Papua New Guinea. Canberra provides financial support for various development projects in Tuvalu while also providing technical assistance on issues such as renewable energy or fisheries management. The United Kingdom also maintains strong ties with Tuvalu due to their shared colonial history when both countries were part of the British Empire. London continues to provide financial aid to support various social projects throughout Tuvalu while also providing technical assistance on issues such as health care or education initiatives. Japan is another important partner for Tuvalu due to their shared commitment to tackle climate change through promoting renewable energy sources such as solar power or wind turbines throughout the island nation. Tokyo has provided financial aid for various infrastructure projects while also providing technical assistance on issues such as disaster risk reduction or ocean governance initiatives that seek to protect marine resources from overfishing or pollution threats.
