The President is elected by popular vote for a five-year term and is responsible for appointing the Prime Minister and other cabinet ministers. The current President of Suriname is Desire Delano Bouterse, who has been in office since 2010. The unicameral National Assembly consists of 51 members, all elected by popular vote to serve four-year terms. It has legislative power to pass laws and can also impeach the president if necessary. The Prime Minister leads the Cabinet, which includes members from both major political parties. The Cabinet is responsible for formulating policy and executing laws passed by Parliament. The judiciary in Suriname is independent from both executive and legislative branches, with its highest court being the Court of Justice headed by a Chief Justice appointed by the President after consultation with an Advisory Council on Selection Matters. There are also several lower courts including District Courts, Magistrate Courts and High Courts. Suriname has a diverse and dynamic foreign relations policy that seeks to promote peace, stability and economic prosperity in the region. As a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Suriname is actively involved in regional affairs and is committed to the promotion of democracy, human rights and rule of law at home and abroad. Suriname maintains close ties with its neighbors in South America such as Brazil, Guyana and Venezuela. In addition to its regional ties, Suriname also has strong diplomatic relations with other countries around the world including Canada, China, India, Japan and other members of the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Suriname is an active participant in multilateral forums such as the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and Organisation of American States (OAS). Through these organizations Suriname hopes to help promote regional stability while at home it is committed to reforming its economy by introducing free market policies that would allow businesses to compete globally. In addition to its diplomatic efforts Suriname is also an important economic power which has sought to increase trade flows with partners such as China, India and other members of OIC.
