the government of Solomon Islands is a constitutional monarchy, with the British Monarch serving as the head of state and the Prime Minister as the head of government. The Prime Minister is appointed by the Governor-General after consultation with Parliament. The legislative branch consists of a unicameral Parliament which is composed of 50 members who are elected by popular vote to serve four-year terms. Solomon Islands also relies on foreign investment from countries such as Australia in order to support economic growth initiatives such as infrastructure development projects. It gained its independence from Britain in 1978 and since then has become increasingly active on the international stage. The country is a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, and other international organizations such as the Pacific Islands Forum.
