The Governor-General is appointed by the British Monarch, while the Prime Minister is appointed by the majority party in Parliament. The legislature in Saint Lucia consists of two chambers – an elected House of Assembly and a Senate which consists of members appointed by the Governor-General on advice from the Prime Minister. Saint Lucia operates a two-party system with parties representing a range of political ideologies from left to right. The current ruling party is the United Workers Party which has been in power since 2016. This party supports economic growth through market liberalization while also providing social welfare programs to protect vulnerable citizens. Saint Lucia has been successful in reducing poverty levels in recent years while also increasing investment in infrastructure projects such as railways, airports and roads. The country has also invested heavily in renewable energy sources such as wind power and solar energy with an aim to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels while also tackling climate change issues. In addition to this, Saint Lucia has invested in research & development projects with an aim to improve technology standards across many industries. It has also implemented several policies aimed at reducing crime levels within its borders, including increased police presence, tougher laws on drug trafficking and improved prison conditions which have contributed significantly towards reducing crime rates within St Lucia’s borders. Saint Lucia is a small island nation located in the Caribbean Sea, with a population of just over 180,000 people. The country is a member of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), the Commonwealth, CARICOM and the United Nations (UN). Saint Lucia enjoys cordial relations with its neighbors in the Caribbean, particularly those within OECS and CARICOM. Saint Lucia has strong diplomatic ties with other countries in the region such as Barbados, Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago as well as countries further afield such as Canada, USA, UK and Cuba. The country also maintains close ties with neighboring nations like Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica and St. Kitts & Nevis. The country’s foreign policy is based on promoting regional integration through organizations such as OECS, CARICOM and United Nations. Additionally, Saint Lucia seeks to foster good relations with its neighbors by engaging in trade agreements such as the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) which allows for free trade between all OECS member states. The country is also active in international diplomacy by participating in peacekeeping missions in Africa through its contribution to UN missions such as MONUSCO (United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo). Additionally, it has contributed to development initiatives through its participation in programs such as G-77 (Group of 77) which promotes economic growth among developing countries. Saint Lucia is also actively engaged in regional initiatives such as ECCB (Eastern Caribbean Central Bank) which provides monetary policy advice to all OECS members states and CARICOM’s PetroCaribe initiative which supports energy security among CARICOM members states by providing access to oil at discounted prices from Venezuela.
