The area was first settled by members of the Oneida tribe who had come from what is now Ontario, Canada. They established several villages in the area and by 1775 their population had grown to over 1,000 people. The Oneida Nation owned all of the land that would later become Oneida until 1838 when it was sold to settlers for $100,000.
As more settlers moved into the area, Oneida began to grow and develop. In 1812 a post office was opened, and later a schoolhouse was built. By 1820 there were two churches in town along with several stores and businesses. In 1827 Oneida became an incorporated village with its own mayor and board of trustees.

This caused a population boom as people flocked to take advantage of this new transportation option which made it easier to travel between cities for business or pleasure.
In 1848 the village officially became a city with its own charter from New York State which granted it self-governance rights including taxation authority, police force, fire department, parks & recreation department, as well as other public services such as water supply and waste management services.
Oneida continued to expand throughout much of the 19th century with new businesses being established as well as new neighborhoods being built around existing ones like Northside (1865) and Eastside (1876).
