The small industry in Kiribati is concentrated on the capital city Tarawa, where clothes, shoes, food, soap and furniture are manufactured. There are also factories for processing coconut products.
The phosphate deposits that previously existed on the island of Banaba put an end to the British colonialists (see Older History and Modern History).
On the island of Kiritimati, solar-powered seawater desalination plants have been in use since 1985. The salt is sold to other Pacific islands and to passing vessels.
