For the domestic market, food and beverages are mainly produced, while the export industry processes sugar, citrus fruits (for juice concentrate) and other agricultural products.

At the end of the 1990s, several free-trade zones with assembly plants grew. There, clothing was mainly manufactured for the market in the United States. The companies in the zones were offered favorable tax terms. Competition from neighboring countries and even China was fierce and in 2008 the last company closed its operations.

An ethanol production based on sugar cane blast began in 2008.
